Being pirate-themed, it should come as no surprise that the reels for Pirates of the Mediterranean remastered have a ship- and sea-themed skin. As with the old version, the developers place the reels in front of the ship’s wheel, with marine images on either side. In the background, you can also see what looks like a fleet of ships, perhaps coming to interrupt your piratical activities. 

The whole environment and atmosphere of the game is welcoming. You feel like a jolly sailor in search of a great treasure. And in a way, you are. Overall, The Spanish Life has the makings of a fun and relaxing video slot. Its medium volatility means you can play this for long periods without ever worrying about losing too much money. Of course, the flip side of this is that you might not win a lot of money either. In fact, the maximum win is 200x your stake, which is nothing compared to some of the other slots out there. 

Still, that doesn’t stop the game from being enjoyable to play, and very relaxing and pleasing to the eye. If you want a high-volatility slot, this definitely isn’t for you. Book of Souls was one of the first games developed by Spearhead Studios, focused on the protagonist Lara Jones. She has a quest to use the mystical Book of Souls to find hidden riches inside an ancient tomb. In short, it’s a slot game that very much has a Tomb Raider feel to it, but it’s packed full of some exciting features that could make a video slot worth trying. It’s also worth noting that we’re reviewing the Remastered version, which came out in November 2021. You still get the same gameplay experience as the original, but with some updated graphics, better symbols, a cleaner interface and an awesome soundtrack.

We have to spend a bit of time talking about the theme and design because it’s such a crucial feature of Book of Souls Remastered. In fact, it is the main thing that has changed since the original game was out. The gameplay is basically untouched, so you don’t get any special new bonuses or anything like that. Instead, the developers wanted to revamp the old game and make it look better and more modern. 

In fairness, they’ve done an excellent job. The theme is clearly inspired by Tomb Raider or Indiana Jones, really giving off the vibe that you’re exploring an ancient Mayan temple. There’s a lot of gold, and it looks awesome when you match symbols or win bonuses as the graphics pop out of the screen and shine gold. In fact, when you get the spin bonus, the Book of Souls itself appears on your screen to tell you what you’ve won, which is a nice touch. 

The soundtrack fills you with the classic adventurer/tomb explorer feelings as well. It genuinely feels as though you’re part of a Tomb Raider or Indiana Jones film, which adds to the tension while you play.

As far as gameplay goes, if you have played the original Book of Souls, this is no different. There are 10 fixed pay lines, and each reel will have 11 symbols on it. You have a minimum bet of 0.10 and a maximum bet of 100. It also boasts an RTP of 95.55%, which is always nice to see.

Book of Souls has 11 symbols – 4 of which are high-paying, 5 of which are low-paying, and a couple of wild symbols. There’s a 10, J and Q, all of which have a maximum payout of 100. Then, you have K and A, with maximum payouts of 150. After this, there’s the Mayan Calendar and the Golden Idol, also with a maximum payout of 150. The Nemesis symbol has a max payout of 2,000, and Lara Jones herself is the best symbol of all, paying out at 5,000 times your stake. 

There’s also the Book of Souls, which is a wild scatter symbol that can trigger the bonus free spins mode if it appears three or more times on the reels. Finally, the 11th symbol is a snake that doesn’t appear on the reels and will appear randomly when the Snake Spin game mode is triggered.
