Book of Toro Overview

Created by the prolific ELK Studios, Book of Toro is the latest slot in the Toro series. This one takes players to the familiar territory of Ancient Egypt, where the same moustachioed Matador is exploring the tombs and ruins of the fascinating civilisation. This game is very much like the others in the Toro canon but with plenty of features and a new theme. Players will be relieved to hear that the max payout is similar to the other games, too - 10,000x the stake for the top win.

The features in this game start with the Mummy Re-spin feature, triggered by landing two or more of the mummy symbols on the reels at once. The Mummies are then locked in place as you try to land more of the symbol. Landing more means more re-spins and eventually gaining entrance into the Toro Goes Wild feature. The Toro Goes Wild bonus is present in all Toro games and features a walking wild. This game also comes with a free spins bonus and an X-iter feature.

Theme and Symbols

The theme for Book of Toro is a concept that will be familiar to players who have played other Toro games. The principal characters of this franchise, the bull and the Matador, are taken to a new setting for each new game. This one is Ancient Egypt. As such, the Matador is dressed in a traditional explorers outfit, with a pith helmet and a leather jacket, combining the styles of Thomas Young and Indiana Jones. On the other hand, the bull is dressed in pharaonic garb, with a headdress, golden bracelets and a sceptre, the end of which has been fashioned into an Ankh.

The background for this slot is a cartoon tomb. Unlike the real tombs of the pharaohs, which are dull, covered in sand and dust and eerily dark, this tomb is lit up in garish light, showing a range of primary colours. This is not surprising, as the overall feeling of any Toro slot is that it is cartoonish fun. The setting, therefore, looks like a children’s playground themed on ancient Egypt rather than the real article. This is exemplified by the two coffins, both in gleaming gold with pharaohs with ridiculous grinning faces.

The playing board for this slot is a golden entrance to a tomb. The payline numbers are labelled on each side in multicoloured boxes.

The symbols for this slot are split into low-paying, high-paying and special symbols. The low-paying symbols are the 10, J, Q, K and A, styled in a roughly Egyptian script. On the other hand, the higher value icons are the Scrab Beetle, Horus Falcon, Eye of Ra and Matador. The Matador is the most valuable of these paying 250x the stake for the top combination. The specials finally are the normal wild, the Toro wild, the Mummy and the book scatter. Each of the special symbols has an ability relating to a bonus feature.

Game Play

Book of Toro is played on a 5-reel, 3-row machine with ten fixed pay lines. To win combinations, players must land three or more matching symbols on pay lines moving from left to right, starting from the leftmost reel.

The betting range for Book of Toro is 20p to £100 per spin. To adjust their bet levels, players can toggle their stake up and down using the tool located at the bottom left-hand side of the screen.

Further information, including a short tutorial and a display of the paytable, can be found via the menu button in the right-hand corner of the screen. The spin and auto spin buttons are located in the centre of the screen.
Volatility for this slot is rated in the medium to high range. The return to player percentage for Book of Toro is 95%, which is below average. The biggest payout that players can win on one spin is 10,000x your stake.

Features

The first feature included in Book of Toro is the Mummy re-spin bonus, activated when two or more of the Mummy scatters land on the reels simultaneously. These special symbols are then frozen onto the reels for the duration of the re-spin. If you land more mummy symbols, you will be given extra spins and potentially entrance to the Toro Goes Wild feature.
The Toro Goes Wild feature (which is the same in every Toro game) starts when a Toro wild lands on reel 5, turning into a walking wild. You are then given re-spins, in which the walking wild moves to the left, knocking symbols off and depositing wilds in his wake. When the Toro Wild is the view, all book scatters become sticky. Players are granted a re-spin for every step the wild takes – (five re-spins).

Next on the feature list is the free spins feature, triggered by landing three or more of the book scatters on the reels at the same time. The more scatters you land, the more spins you are granted. A symbol is also randomly selected to become the expanding symbol for these spins.

The symbol expands when one of three things happens:
- Two high-value symbols appear.
- Two medium symbols appear.
- Three low-value symbols appear.
This feature can be retriggered by landing more scatters.

Finally, there is the X-iter feature which is ELK studio’s version of a bonus buy feature. However, this feature is not available in the UK.

Conclusion

If you enjoyed the previous Toro games, it is more than likely that you will get on with this one. It has much of the same content, yet it is wrapped up in a new skin for a fresh perspective. Features are rewarding enough, and the top prize is definitely tempting. You must watch out for the volatility, though, as it bounces wins around a bit.
