Apocalypse Quest Overview

With the year 2020 panning out the way it did It will come as no surprise that the post- apocalyptic genre is getting far more attention from developers than ever. It is also the brunt of many jokes with no one quite sure about what the year to come has to offer. The gaming developers have caught on to this and there are many slots being released that have a darker feel to them and Apocalypse Quest from GameArt is just one of them. Obviously, even though the world may be coming to an end this does not mean that players cannot make some money, and this slot will give you many opportunities. Therefore, if you are ready to head into the unexpected please read on.

Design, Symbols and Theme

When it comes to the design Apocalypse Quest is complete with a Mad Max style, which is complete with a steampunk influence and modified quad bikes. This all works well and gives the slot a unique look. Amongst the symbols there are many main characters including a hero, nemesis, a female character who is the scatter and the games logo being the wild. The regular symbols include two of the quad bikes along with some dynamite, a crossbow and the four low value playing card suits clubs, diamonds, hearts, and spades.

Gameplay, Facts and Figures

The slot plays out on a 5x3 reels and 243 ways to win and it is easy to form winning combinations. Through the top feature there are wins of up to 1000x your stake. The developer has marketed this game as highly volatile even though the rewards do not justify the risk for the player. The games average returns are good although a little lower than usual and the return to player stands at 96.1%. When it comes to the features you can expect to come across a wild, free spins and Apocalypse re-spins.
When it comes to placing your bet, you do require a few coins, 50 to be precise when there are 243 ways to win. This results in you spending between $0.50 and $250 per spin which equates to the coin value of $0.01 to $5.

The pay outs do not strike me as being that exciting particularly if you take into consideration that the volatility which is stated as high. You can land up to 1000x your stake or $250,000 from the fixed Jackpots, with the Grand version is the best that can be activated. Regular win combinations offer one extra stake per line and up to 243 ways in total which really is the kind of reward you would expect from a game with low volatility. Whilst the pay outs may appear to be disappointing, offering 96.1% return to player means that things will work out in the end probably due to the features that are on offer.

Features

Despite its shortcomings, I really like the way that the features have been built into the game, they are interesting and designed to follow the theme in their own special way and this makes them more fun.

Apocalypse Re-spins is one of the big features that are available, and you can activate these when the Hero symbols show up on six or more positions at the same time. The Hero is the scatter therefore the location is not relevant to the game.
Due to the regular symbols being removed all you will be left with will be the triggering Hero symbols on the reels and these will then transform into Nemesis symbols. You will be rewarded with three free spins where there will only be the Hero and Nemesis symbols in view along with blank positions. When you land the Hero symbols these will morph into the Nemesis and give prizes, or one of the three lower value fixed jackpots as described above. If the Hero symbol lands, then the prizes are collected, and the re-spins are reactivated once again with three remaining in play.

The way to land the Grand Jackpot, which is the biggest pay-out, you need all 15 positions to be covered with Nemesis symbols.
When the scatters come into play the symbols are marked with the images of the female character and this can activate 9 free spins. You need to land three of the female character scatters on your 1st, 3rd and 5th reels which then activates the feature. If you reactivate the feature, you will only be rewarded with three extra free spins, and this is if you have landed the additional three scatters.

Out of the entire features in this slot I would say that the free spins are my favourite as not only do you have free spins that you do not need to pay for, but they also only use the higher value symbols as low value symbols are removed from the reels. This means that you have a few symbols to work with, so the wins are easier to form, and as they are only the higher value symbols because the lower symbols have been removed the wins will be bigger. Unfortunately, the value of the symbols is rather low even for the top payers, however the future is still a lot more profitable than anything in the base game.
There is just one more symbol that comes into play, and this is the wild which is the games logo and can be used to substitute for all the symbols to create winning combinations.

Conclusion

Apocalypse Quest is a fun slot to play and this is thanks to the features as well as the graphics as both make it not only visually pleasing but quite exciting. Personally, I am not over keen on the mix of rewards and volatility even though the return to player is a respectable 96.1%.

I dare say that a lot of players who are keen on this kind of theme will find this game to be entertaining and rewarding. However, it may not have the general appeal to amass a huge following. Putting my own prejudice aside I enjoyed the game when I trialled it and I have no reason to put the game down on any level. It is well executed, easy to play, has some good features as well as pay outs which is really all players can ask for. If this type of slot appeals, then I would recommend you give it a spin or two.
