Overview of Rise of Athena slot
Athena was one of the most important figures in the classical world as well as being one of the highest deities in the pantheon. She even had a city names after her, Athens. Slots rarely mention her and when they do it is a fleeting reference or she is coupled with Zeus who gets all the attention, for one reason or another. The developers at Play ‘n’ Go have decided it is time that Athena got to shine in her own slot where she holds the most prominent position.
Game Play and Statistics
The slot has a minimalistic appearance, but it is very appealing with the background depicting a structure like a temple sitting under a beautiful blue sky. The developers have given this slot an air of superiority and it has a timeless quality that you can really submerse yourself within it. The ruins are still impressive so they must have been superb 2,000 years ago.
Rise of Athena plays out using 5-reels and 10 pay lines and whilst the developers could have given the reels some wow factor the appearance is very in keeping with the essence of Ancient Greek architecture.
When it comes to placing your bets there is a good range that will appeal to a wide variety of players. Bets start from a minimum of 10p per spin up to a maximum of £100 per spin. The math model is like the “Book of” slots in other words highly volatile but there is a great hit rate that goes with it, well it did when I tested the game. You can expect to land a mixture of premium symbols coupled with some streamlined gaming that will provide players with some dramatic ups and downs, making it the ideal slot for fans of the more straight forward and a far more hardcore gaming experience.
Although the slot does not offer a great deal of extras the wild symbols are far more interesting than they usually are. Not only can the wilds substitute for the regular symbols to create winning combinations but they are also complete with random multipliers that are between 1x and 3x. If you land more than one wild on a line win then these multipliers are multiplied to give you even bigger win combinations.
The symbols in this slot are neatly divided to create low and high paying group. The low payers are the usual royal playing cards 10 through to Ace, but these are very beautifully detailed with a crackled marble finish that are complete with olive leaves, which brings in the Greek theme nicely. On the other end of the scale there are the high paying symbols which include smoky jars, scrolls, plumed helmets, Pegasus, and the star of the show Athena. The values range from 10x – 150x your bet when you land five of a kind. It is also worth noting that you will win 1x you bet for landing two Athena symbols on a line.
This slot sticks with simplicity and there is only a couple of features that you can take advantage off. The first is the free spins feature which is activated when you land three or more of the scatter symbols which is represented by the owl and landing three rewards you with 12 free spins. The owls can land anywhere, and they also pay from any position on your reels proving wins of 1x, 20x, or 500x your bet when 3, 4, or 5 land in view, respectively.
There are no major changes in the free spins, except from the ways the wilds operate. When you land wilds, they stay sticky on the reels until the multiplier have been spent. The multiplier on each wild reduces by one on every spin, therefore a 3x will last for three wins before it vanishes. Unfortunately, the free spins cannot be reactivated.
The other feature if you can call it a feature is that you can pay this game for free. I always think of this as a feature because there is no better way to learn exactly how a game plays out and whether it is something that is for you. Also, anything that is free is good for me!
Rise of Athena offers up plenty of all-time classic gaming where features are minimal, but game play can get hairy! To me I feel as though Rise of Athena is the total epiphany of what Play ‘n’ Go were trying to achieve but I do not think it will be the slot for everyone. With the basic stripped back game play, it will appeal to those who do not want excess details to get in their way or slow the slot down at all.
The multiplier wilds are more than pretty symbols as they do come into play a lot, in the base game they play a huge part in landing the higher wins. What I found most interesting was that although the wilds are quite sticky, most bonuses ended less profitable that a long line of wins in the base game. That is not to say that Rise of Athena does not provide solid potential because it really does. The other major highlights are the super slick graphics which it right in with the whole game play.
Every slot has some possible sticking details with the first here being that it is basic and may get a little boring therefore if you are looking for a slot with plenty of features Rise of Athena may not be for you. I did find that I got a little stuck in a period of dead spins and it is times like this where you need to stay strong, after all I did and it paid off as I walked away with a cool 5,000x my bet for my patience!
Rise of Athena is the slot that you will love and will sometimes infuriate you but for me it was love and for this reason I would rate it as a 8/10 and urge players to give this a spin or two.
