Flodder Overview

Reading the title of this game you may be forgiven for not knowing the first thing about this game or what it is based on, especially if you are part of the British audience. That is because this strange, yet very artistic slot is based on a Dutch comedy film produced in 1986 called Flodder. The comedy follows a dysfunctional and anti-social family who move into a well-heeled neighbourhood and all the capers and hilarious activity which follows. It's your standard rebellious family comedy. Playing mechanics-wise this is a 5-reel 4-row game with 25 fixed pay lines and an RTP of 95.75%.

There are two bonus features in this game. The first is a bonus called the Grandpa Flodder feature. This bonus is triggered completely at random. When it is, Grandpa Flodder will appear on the screen depositing between two and twelve new wild symbols on the board to help score more wins. This feature can occur in the base and free spins games. The other feature is the free spins bonus, triggered when players land three or more of the pink Cadillac scatters on the reels at the same time. Theme and Symbols

Directed by Dick Maas, Flodder is the first film in what became the Flodder Franchise with two more films and a TV series. It establishes the main characters in the Flodder family and their various traits that make them so disagreeable to the idyllic town in which they find themselves. The father of the family for example like to drive fast cars, party all night and use drugs. The mother on the other hand is scandalously clothed most of the time which causes much resentment and jealousy from the neighbouring wives as the male population starts to notice her presence around the town. It’s a pretty esoteric film that outside of the Netherlands would be very difficult to find admirers.
The background for this game is the house into which the Flodder family moved. Flodder by the way is Dutch for ‘empty cartridge’ and is a euphemism for the family being no good or without moral substance. The suburban home owned by the Flodder family unlike its pristine neighbours is littered with beer cans, rubbish and various items of debauchery such as thongs, bras and drug paraphernalia. The house and its occupants are a direct contravention of the upstanding Dutch moral philosophy, which is the concept for the film.

The playing board is a white-painted wood construction created to emulate the house’s exterior.
The symbols are split into low-paying, high-paying and special symbols. The low-paying icons are the 10, J, Q, K and A in playing card royals. The A is the most valuable, worth 6x the stake for the top combination. The more valuable symbols on the other hand are whiskey the dog, Zoon Kees, Dochter Kees, Johnnie and Grandma. Grandma is the most valuable symbol, worth 50x the stake for the top combination. The specials for this game are the Grandpa stick wild, the pink Cadillac free spins scatter, the Sjakie Wild, the Grandma Wild and the Johnnie Wild.

Game Play

Flodder is played on a 5-reel, 3-row machine with 25 fixed pay lines. To win combinations, players must land three or more matching symbols on pay lines moving from left to right, starting from the leftmost reel.

The betting range for Flodder is 10p to £10 per spin. To adjust their bet levels, players can toggle their stake up and down using the tool located at the bottom left-hand side of the screen.

Features

The first feature here is called the Grandpa Flodder feature. At any time during the game, Grandpa Flodder is liable to emerge and walk across the screen depositing a range of wilds between two and twelve in all. These new wilds then help to score more wins by substituting in for other icons on the board.
The other feature in this game is the free spins game, triggered when players land three or more pink Cadillac scatters on the reels at the same time. Three scatters will award players with ten free spins. However, the number of scatters used to trigger the bonus also correlates to the number of picks you are given to select modifiers. Twenty bottles will then appear on the screen, you are to then pick 3,4 or 5 of them (depending on how many scatters you landed). Each bottle picked will reveal a modifier that will be active during your spins. These are explained below:
Free Spins: 2, 3, 4, 5 or 10 extra free spins.
Win Multiplier: 1 or 2 added to the 1x base multiplier (up to 8x).
Sjakie Wild: Adds 1×3 super wild on 2nd and/or 4th reel for the whole feature.

Conclusion

Although the thematic basis may be unfamiliar to many of the players that might come across this slot, gamers soon get a hang of what is going on and will start enjoying this fun and rambunctious slot. Sadly, from a win potential point of view, things don’t look quite as good. The RTP is low, the volatility is high and the top win could be improved.
