spartacus-megaways-slotSpartacus Megaways is from the development team at WMS and this Roman themed slot certainly has plenty of sandals and swords to play with. WMS has partnered with SG Digital to use the Megaways license to provide this follow up to Spartacus: Gladiator of Rome their and based classic. The original was a rather complicated slot as it was created using a dual 5x4 + 5x12 setup. This newer version is far simpler and plays on a simple grid whilst the win ways have been multiplied by 10,000 plus there are a couple of excellent new features for players to enjoy.

Spartacus is a name that everyone is familiar with, and he is said to have been trained in gladiatorial arts, after which history says that he led the slaves in an uprising which brought the Roman army down in numerous battles which took place along the peninsula. Whilst this theme is always romanticised in true form in TV shows and films, in this slot it gets a similar treatment.

Spartacus Megaways Overview

The slot is set within an area of columns which are draped by thick rich red curtains which provides the slot with a theatre feeling. There are six main reels plus a horizontal four position reel. The bonus reels are not where you might expect them to be as WMS has set them to run across the bottom of the game screen as opposed to above the main grid. However, they do say that a change is as good as a rest.

The game play is complemented perfectly by the soundtrack that adds even more of a theatrical quality. It resembles the type of music you would expect to be in a mythical/biblical film of the 70s which is shown every Easter or Christmas. It is a combination of Ben Hur or a film by Franco Zeffirelli film classics. Then there is the guitar solo which in my opinion is totally over the top, but you may feel it makes the slot even more epic if that is possible.

How to Play

On every spin the number of symbols that land are different and start from 2 to 10 on the main set of reels, and when you take into account the bonus reel this slot is capable of providing you with up to a million ways to win. In other words, more than the usual 117,649 that is usually offered in a Megaways slot. Whilst this seems like a unique number there has been 1 million Megaways BC.

When it comes to placing your bet you can choose from 20p per spin to a maximum of £20 per spin and this slot offers a strong return to player that stands a little above average at 96.32% which is also more than offered by the original slot. The volatility does not actually throw you to the lions although it still airs on the higher side.

Pay table & Symbols

When it comes to the pay table you will see 12 symbols which are split into low and high paying. The low paying symbols are the usual playing card symbols 9 through to Ace but these have a unique Roman styled font. The higher paying symbols are made up of swords, helmets, axes, gladiators, swords, tigers, and the game logo. The values are rather low however I put this down to the possibility of have one million Megaways on your screen. The highest reward is 25x your stake and this is paid for landing six logos and this drops to 7.5x for the gladiators to give you an indicator of how things can pan out. The unique thing in this slot is that the wild only makes an appearance on the 6th reel but not on the bottom reel. The wild is worth nothing on its own but it can substitute for all the symbols apart from the bonus symbol which is represented by the Amphitheatre symbol.

Spartacus Megaways Features

There are various features on offer in Spartacus Megaways, which include cascades that are in play for every part of the game, free spins and a curtain which is truly dynamic. The cascade is activated when you land a winning combination that is made up of three or more of the same symbols. The cascade explodes the winning symbols from your reels and new ones then fall into the gaps which is a process that can create several wins from just one single spin, and this carries on until no more wins are made. For every win you land also see the multiplier raise by +1 with no limit on how high it can go.

For every spin, a random number of the positions on the reels are covered by the red curtains, then when a win lands in the base game and this then removes the curtain from one place on a random reel. This expands the win ways dynamic and in turn opens the grid to increase the chances of new cascades occurring.

Landing four or more Amphitheatre symbols in view on your screen and the free spins unlock. This starts with a wheel rotating and rewarding you with 6 – 16 free spins complete with a determined curtain arrangement. The activated number of curtains remain still for the whole feature meaning that they cannot be decreased by wins as they are in the base game. This is perfect if you have a low number of curtains or even zero, but not quite as good if you find yourself with many of the positions on the reels covered up.

Once in the free spins each every wild you land will expand and completely cover the reel, and this includes any of the positions that are covered by the curtain. Better still though landing three of more visible scatters will re-award you with the same number of spins that originally activated the feature, and the curtain patterns remain in the same place for the retriggers.

Conclusion

If you have played Spartacus: Gladiator of Rome and thought to yourself this would be fabulous if it only offered a million ways to win; well now it does! Whilst it is not the easiest of slots, once you have tried a spin or two you will soon get the hang of things and the wins will start rolling in. I did find the curtain styled dynamic rather off, admittedly it does give you something to aim for, and the whole clearing the position with the cascades is always a great feature, but with the immovable curtains it is fine if you get a low number but not so great if you end up with several locked curtains.
