A significant development came in 1988 when WMS acquired the assets of Gambling Device Manufacturing Company, a gaming device engineering firm founded by Roger E. Sharpe, who had publicly opened the first bingo machine in 1973. The acquisition gave them an electronic-wagering technology on which they based their subsequent developments. In 1993 the company introduced its first video slot machine, titled Reel them In.
In 1996 WMS acquired Casino Data Systems, a producer of custom-designed slot machines, and its main competitor, GDE Systems. This transaction brought into the fold the ‘Shelby,’ a popular two-and five-coin video poker machine. The company also began to expand its mechanical reels and cabinets for the international market, which GDE had developed. 1999 saw WMS making another acquisition, buying out Alliance Gaming Corporation’s interest in International Game Technology (IGT). The purchase was a reflection of the shift in preference towards video slot machines and video poker variants.
